Theatre and Cinema
Leatherhead has a long and distinguished reputation for
live theatre. The tradition dates back to Tudor times.
But it was in the 20th century when its reputation was
particularly high with the foundation in 1950 of the Under
Thirty Theatre Group, later the Leatherhead Theatre Club,
under Hazel Vincent Wallace.
When the company needed bigger and better facilities,
a new theatre was built in 1969 to a design by Roderick
Ham, one of the country's foremost theatre architects.
The result was an innovative design of exposed concrete
walls and elevated walkways and a wonderful auditorium
of 512 seats. The theatre has been listed grade two, in
recognition of the quality of the building.
The Theatre was conceived as a cultural centre and the
present owners are running it along those lines. The Theatre
offers live theatre, cinema, conference facilities, art
exhibitions, a café and bar. The Metro Café is
open during the day for a wide selection of food and drink
from breakfast to mid-afternoon.
The Theatre is the centre of cultural life in Leatherhead
and an enjoyable place to take in the relaxed and comfortable
interiors. |
