Visiting the Town Centre
Leatherhead is not a town that would be especially high
on a list of places to visit, and yet it should be. It is
well served by trains from London, is within a few minutes
of junction 9 of M25 and on the principal route, the A24,
between the capital and the south coast.
It has a landscape setting that is second to none, with
the delightful River Mole providing a corridor for walkers
through the Mole Gap and into the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding
Natural Beauty. A few minutes walk from the busy commercial
core of Leatherhead it is possible to be in the rolling
hills of the North Downs amid vineyards and woodland. Norbury
Park, Mickleham Downs and Fetcham Downs are all within easy
walking distance.
The Mole Gap also provides a route into the countryside
for cyclists along a purpose built and off road cycle track.
From this route it is possible to reach easily some of the
Surrey Hills most alluring beauty spots, including Box Hill,
Headley Heath and Ranmore Common.
To the north of Leatherhead the countryside is very different
but no less fascinating. Ashtead Common and Bookham Common
are both Sites of Special Scientific Interest, with extensive
opportunities for walking and riding. Ashtead Park is an
important historic park land.
Leatherhead therefore lies at the centre of some of the
most wonderful landscape, but to ignore the town would be
a mistake. Town trails are provided to link some of the
its historic buildings. Within the main streets is a range
of good shops, restaurants and cafes. At the gateway to
the glorious and much loved Surrey Hills, Leatherhead is
a wonderful base from which to explore the best of Surrey.
