| The
Surrey Hills Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty
The Surrey Hills stretches across a quarter of the County
of Surrey to include the chalk slopes of the North Downs,
from Farnham in the west to Oxted in the east and extending
south to the deeply wooded Greensand Hills which rise in Haslemere.
This treasured landscape of beautiful countryside is rich
in wildlife, woodland and attractive market towns and villages
and provides some of the best walking in the whole of Southern
England. It is within easy reach of Leatherhead town centre
by foot along the River Mole, by bus or car.
The Surrey Hills is one of 37 nationally protected landscapes
in England, and was one of the first areas to be designated
an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty back in 1958, with
its beauty being considered equivalent to that of a National
Park. This designation recognises the beauty of the landscape
and ensures that it is properly conserved and managed for
future generations to enjoy. Within the Surrey Hills are
some fantastic opportunities for visits to attractions and
walks in woodland, heathland and downland as a day visit
or a short break.
The Surrey Hills Partnership was established in 1998 to
protect the beauty of the Surrey Hills for the safe use
and enjoyment of all.
